Our Summary of Say Yes by Tobias Wolff
Tobias Wolff's work 'Say Yes' is guided by a narrator listening to the discussion of a husband and his wife. Wolff doesn't provide a name for the husband, but Ann, his wife, is concerned about her husband's opinion that interracial marriages do not work. Particularly, the unnamed husband believes that African Americans shouldn't marry whites, because each person comes from a different he further believes that Americans and foreigners shouldn't mix on the same ground. It is the narrator of the story who implies that the husband might secretly be a racist, but nowhere in the story does the author explicitly highlight this belief as fact. Wolff transitions the novel by allowing Ann the priv she cuts her hand washing dishes. The husband incurs sympathy from the reader when he runs to clean the cut. The conversation picks up again as Ann pretends she is African American to determine her husband's line of reasoning. By the end of 'Say Yes,' the couple reconciles and Wolff ends the work with the sound of a stranger walking.
