What the developers have to say:
Why Early Access?
&***THE SANDBOX IS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF IMPROVEMENT, AND IT ISN'T FINISHED. BUYING THE LONG DARK ON EARLY ACCESS SUPPORTS OUR ABILITY TO CONTINUE IMPROVING THE GAME.*** While the game is already very stable and highly playable, the Sandbox is constantly evolving. Features and balance tuning may change from version to version. Content will be added, some may be removed, and entire systems might change or disappear. We appreciate your patience as we go through this process of evolving the game with community feedback.
We'd like to expose the Sandbox portion of the game to as wide an audience as possible so that we can derive maximum playtesting value before we launch the game &for real&.
Please note that the game's price will likely increase when we launch the full release version, to reflect improvements and the growth of content during Early Access. The current price reflects the unfinished state of the game.&
Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
&Our intention is to remain in Early Access until we launch the full Story Mode. We'll continue refining and expanding the Sandbox experience until we launch the first two of our five planned Season One episodes. More info on Story Mode progress, and a Sandbox roadmap here: &
How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
&The full game will offer both the Sandbox and Story modes -- i.e. the Story mode will be entirely new narrative content that lives within the Survival Sandbox. The Sandbox will also offer more content at full launch. If you buy the game on Early Access now, you will immediately get the Sandbox Mode, and will also get the Story Mode once it launches (final # of episodes to be determined).&
What is the current state of the Early Access version?
&We have a fully playable Sandbox mode of the game that has been in Alpha with hundreds of players for several months already. Most of our players are getting dozens of hours of gameplay, with several having played over 100 hours already!&
Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
&We are pricing the Early Access version of the game at $19.99 USD, to reflect the unfinished, work-in-progress state of the game. This price will increase when we exit Early Access and launch the full game, to reflect general improvements and increased content and play time.&
How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?
&We will engage the community in the Steam forums, as well as in our own Alpha forums, where we already pull bug fixing and playtest/tuning information to the betterment of the game. We will continue to do that, although we intend to devote more resources towards the community interaction aspect once we launch on Early Access since we expect the audience to grow significantly beyond the players we currently have.&

Recent updates
Dear Community,
The team’s been working hard on a ton of Story Mode features and content and here’s an update on some of what we've been up to since the last Story Mode update. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to really talk about Story Mode without at hinting at spoilers, so consider this a warning that there are light story mode spoilers below:
### THERE ARE LIGHT STORY MODE SPOILERS BELOW ###
New Regions
We’ve added two new regions for Episode One. One is nearly finished, and the other is being updated based on some story and mission changes, and will then be getting an art beautification pass. There are several new structures across both the new regions. Part of the new world we’ve added in Episode One is meant to help set the tone for what the world was like before “the event”. We also feel it’s important that Story Mode freshens up the existing Sandbox world for you, so in addition to adding new regions, we’re also updating the rest of the existing world.
Many of the exterior updates -- like more detailed rocks, better grass, trees, etc. -- will be gradually released in Sandbox updates. Most of the interiors -- places like the Carter Dam, the Camp Office, Pleasant Valley Farm, etc. -- have been updated with much more detailed interiors. Those interiors will be released when we launch Story Mode, so even the fans who are a lot more focused on Sandbox will be get something new to enjoy.
Episode One Playtesting
Episode One is fully playable from start to finish and we’re now doing in-house playtesting to work on pacing, flow, and polish. It’s been really interesting to see how the core survival gameplay we’ve proven in Sandbox works within a structure of open-world narrative-driven exploration. We’ve had to do a lot of tuning of various elements to find the right balance between survival and exploration. In general though, it feels really great to explore the game world while motivated by clear narrative goals -- it makes for a nice contrast to the more open-ended Sandbox gameplay you’ve become used to.
One thing that’s emerged from our playtesting is that our current Episode One is much bigger than we expected. Most of our in-house playtests have it at about 5-6 hours of playtime, which is roughly twice as long as we had originally planned each episode being. This play length is determined by what narrative beats we’re hitting with Episode One, and how we’re pacing those out with our world size and gameplay “heartbeat”. We’re trying to figure out how this impacts our plans for Season One content.
We’ve also been working on all the Episode One narrative sequences. Some of these are 2D motion-graphics cinematics, in the same style as the Story Mode teaser we released last December. Some of these are interactive sequences with full 3D characters in the world. These 3D character sequences are a huge amount of work for us because they require building all the character assets, animating those characters to dialogue, building sets for them, etc. These are the kinds of sequences that aren’t normally built by small independent developers, as they are very time consuming and resource intensive. We’ve probably been quite over-ambitious in delivering these but we feel strongly about the importance of seeing these important story characters living and breathing in the game world as opposed to being limited to non-interactive cinematics.
New Clothing
We’ve recreated all the clothing assets in the game, to better match our updated character designs. We’ve also added several new clothing items. These items will replace all the equippable clothing gear items in the game, and also be the same clothing worn by characters you meet in the world. We’re also doing some work to improve the Clothing system, by adding some new gameplay features, and a better interface. Our goal is to be able to represent the clothing your character is wearing on a kind of “paper doll” interface, so you get a stronger sense of character “customization” that way. We’d like to support this with additional character customization features (for Sandbox) in the future, as suggested in our Sandbox Roadmap, but a lot of that work is aspirational at the moment. For now, we’re really happy to be able to update the clothing assets, to help the whole world feel more coherent. It’s probable that these updated clothing assets will end up being released in a Sandbox update, rather than us waiting for Story Mode to release them.
First-Person Presence
The team’s been hard at work on improving the sense of first-person presence in the game. These updates aren’t technically related to Story Mode as we’ve decided to release them incrementally as part of Sandbox updates, but this is a pretty huge area of work for us as it’s meant creating a whole new animation system. Adding hands and a stronger first-person presence to the game is a huge undertaking and something we held off on for a long time out of fear of the scope of work, as The Long Dark has a large number of potential interactions compared to a lot of other games, but in the end I believe that including them strengthens the sense of your physical vulnerability in the game world and will create a more immediate feeling of connectedness to the environment, which in turn feeds into the range of emotions the game can inspire.
We haven’t said much about the Aurora since we’re trying not to spoil it -- but here are a few images to give you an idea of some of the things you might see in the game because of it.
Sandbox Updates
We know that while a lot of you are anxious about Story Mode news, many of you are actually a lot more interested in Sandbox progress. We’re doing our best to balance the need to get Story Mode launched, with your desire for regular Sandbox updates. Currently, about
of the team is focused on Story Mode-specific content -- so, mission scripting, environment art, characters, animation, audio, etc. -- and the other
is working on Sandbox updates. Because most of our content team is focused on Story Mode, our more recent Sandbox updates have been be focused on gameplay mechanics and UI. This will likely continue to be the case until we launch Story Mode. We know that a lot of you would like us to expand Sandbox with more regions -- but unfortunately every region we build for Sandbox is one we can’t build for Story, and we don’t want to release the new Story Mode regions until we launch it, so they are new when you play them!
We understand that for the people who are really waiting on Story mode, that our time spent on Sandbox updates isn’t really meaningful to you, and vice versa for the people who care more about Sandbox. We’ve been slowly adding people to the team to try to increase our development bandwidth, but hiring is a painstaking process for a small studio, as everyone you add to the team has a much greater impact to the project and the overall team dynamic. And, we’re pretty picky about who we add to the team. We’re trying to be wise about how we do this so that we don’t break things that are working well for us, and when it comes to hiring, wise usually equals slow.
Launch Date
We’ve announced launch dates in the past, in the hope that providing these dates would give you something concrete to look forward to. Unfortunately, all they did was create disappointment when we decided to delay beyond these dates. Last time we talked about dates I said I wouldn’t provide a new date until I was 100% sure we would hit it. To that end, I’m not going to say anything further about when we’ll ship Story Mode, except to re-iterate that the team is working very hard on it, our goal is to launch content that lives up to your expectations and lets us capitalize on the full potential of our work, and most of all, to create something that will redefine the “survival” genre as the first strongly narrative-driven exploration-survival experience. And as Hinterland’s first title, and as part of an ongoing episodic/Seasonal release plan, it’s critical that we get our launch of The Long Dark right, as it sets the bar for our studio’s future. Not only will it help determine whether we can achieve our full ambitions for The Long Dark in the future -- it will also help determine what other experiences we may (or may not) be able to make in the future.
As always, we appreciate your support. We do not take it for granted.
Sincerely,
We've just updated our Roadmap for The Long Dark Sandbox to version 1.2, which includes an aspirational feature/content list for our next Sandbox Update.
Check it out:
Please remember that this is an aspirational list, meant to give you an idea of some of the things we are working on, and some of the things we hope to work on. It's possible that some of the things on the list may not end up in the game.
Also, please note that over 2/3 of the development team is working exclusively on Story Mode content and features, which has an impact on Sandbox update scope and frequency.
Thank you for your understanding!
- The Hinterland Team

Be on the lookout for Black Bears, as they roam the landscape in search of food.

Awesome looking survival game. I love when a game draws me in, dare I say it feels immersive- I actually shivered a few times just from playing this game! GG
Early Access Review
One of my favourite games in my library right now, I almost feel bad for the amount of time I've got out of this game considering how little I paid for it.It's not a game for everyone - with just the sandbox there is currently no 'end game' objective other than to survive as long as you can (and pick up a few achievements) however a story mode is coming and looks set to exceed expectations. There is also no multiplayer mode, a fairly common request but one the devs have made clear will not happen. It wouldn't work with the mechanics of the game anyway. That being said I'm quite happy with the game as it is - the production values are incredible for such a small team, and they have avoided the trap a lot of smaller startup devs fall into which is to try and do too much with too little. They've kept their focus on the things they do want to do, and done them well. The art design is wonderful and gives the game a unique character. Sound production is often something that takes a backseat in games but it particularly stands out in the Long Dark - the creaking of trees in a forest and the sound of snow falling to the ground, the howls of wolves in the distance, the rattling of a tin roof in the wind giving hints that shelter may be just across that hill. When caught in a raging blizzard you can almost feel the wind searing your face and chilling you to the bone. Some of my most sublime gaming moments have come from The Long Dark - staggering through the snow in unknown territory, desperately searching for some shelter as hunger and cold slowly set in. The flickering light of my oil lamp giving the illusion of safety. Finally stumbling across an open sided shed and crawling into the back to escape the wind, only to find myself sharing the space with a frozen corpse. Using the last of my matches to start a fire as hypothermia sets in, and night falls, then just sitting and watching the stars as I tend the fire. It's hard to describe the atmosphere this game creates without playing it yourself, but there's a certain feeling of loneliness and vulnerability that is rare in games. Best played in a dark empty room with headphones.

This is a great game. You really get a sense of being there and trying to survive. I love the graphics, really gives you ambience but not cluttered. Looking forward to the story mode, but I've already got my moneys worth.
Because it is currently sandbox there isn't a story to force you along a path, so if you get bored of a grind this is not a game for you.
Early Access Review
Recommend to play as voyager or stalker difficulty because for me pilgrimige was too easy, I like to feel that little strugle feeling of game.

Simply exquisite. The most brutally engaging survival game I've ever played.

Amazing graphics, possiblility for an immersive experiance, realistic enough to make me feel the frozen winds slashing against my arms and my stomache to grumble when I see a deer. The only problem with this game is the fact that it isn't finished, but still a great playthrough.

This is the best game i've ever played..there is nothing like it out there anywhere...I get a rush every time I play, the environment is beautiful and unfiorgiving at the same time...I would recommend this game to anyone and everyone.

This game is B E A U T I F U L, has a very good scare factor i feel like every noise i hear is something you become very paranoid of the things around you, being in a dark unlite building is scary as hell, its amazing, this game has a very good creep factor, the style makes it amazing, the craft and item system is a little strange but its very well put together. This game is a great survival game

Early Access Review
I have played a lot of survival games. For the most part, they all either start off great and end up stinking, or they stink from the onset. This game is different. For the very first time I can say that a survival game has nailed survival. It is doing so in the most elegant and streamlined fashion, which I can't even believe I'm typing. Years of games like Dayz have lead me to believe that survival games are supposed to be clumsy, sloppily designed, and painful to learn.Thankfully The Long Dark handles cooking, crafting and inventory with an ease and simplicity that throws a middle finger to almost any survival game I've tried. It's single player. I think, as of now, that is the only downside I would have for the game - but it isn't a downside. This game instills a very tangible fear in you for mother nature. You feel alone, but you are surrounded by beauty. Gorgeous forests, mountain trails, and of course snow capped mountains and icy lakes. The play area is massive, loot and spawn locations are randomized each new game, and the threat of harsh snow storms is only bested by the sight of a wolf, or worse, wolves... or even worse - a bear.Discovering books allows you to read up on certain things, like ice fishing, firearms, or building campfires. Finishing these books enhances those abilities.Finding your first rifle is empowering, and shooting a charging bear in the face 2 times before it mauls you is soul crushing.T Just over two hours into my first playthrough, feeling confident, I wandered into the dawn. Outside of my vision, a bear had spotted me. By the time I turned to fire, it was too late. When the bear finished mauling me, I was shocked to find I was left hanging on to my life. I stumbled between some large rocks, built a campfire, and used almost all of the first aid I had. Still hopeful, I ate a meal and laid down in my sleeping bag to rest and regain my vitality.Little did I know that my injuries would claim me as I drifted into dreams. The game is complex, and yet every mechanic is intuitive and easy to learn. Exploration is exciting, whether it is a small lakeside cabin, an expansive network of caves, or an abandoned hydro dam. Often times the game evokes a sense of wonder, excitement and fear that I don't recall having since I first played Fallout 3.Get this game. It's the best single player survival game I've ever ????ing played, and I knew it within the first hour. If it wasn't, then why would I have stopped playing just to tell you all of this? I am hopeful that one day a multiplayer survival title will take notes from this game. It would be amazing to play a game as silky smooth and devoid of zombies alongside friends and strangers. This is a title that would actually cause players to work together, because as threatening as the wolves and bears are - the world you must explore to survive is even more hostile.

I have issues playing this game. I'm just too big of a wussy to actually play it for a long period of time. The first time I ever saw a wolf, I was in the Hydroelectric Dam at night. I was walking down the stairs without a care in the world thinking wolves just couldn't possibly spawn in a building. I turned the corner and that boom, getting mauled... Lets just say I didn't rage-quit, I fear-quit. Never before have I hit Alt-f4 so quickly out of pure terror. 10/10 for PTSD.

This game is aesthetically satisfying, immersive, and fun. Of all the early-development games I've played, this has been my favorite. Dying after so many hours of walking, collecting, hunting, crafting and har however, the permadeath aspect requires thought-out planning for every endeavor. +: I love the music, the sounds of nature, the exploration and the struggle to survive. I am so happy to find a game like this that doesn't have zombies or a ridiculous premise. I love how in-depth the statistics are recorded and available to track in-game and compare between games. Being able to record notes on my travels and activities is useful - I used this feature to record where I had to leave essential items behind in order to efficiently travel to new destinations.-: I am very exci however, it is very difficult to be patient. I am dissatisfied by the lack of background information, features and dialogue that I hope will be implemented in the story mode. I would have enjoyed the ability to record a rudimentary map in-game based on areas I have already traveled.Overall an incredible game, and I am looking forward to the Story!

Early Access Review
I purchased this game with story mode about to drop in the not too distant future. That date came and went in the spring of this year. I was not sure about getting it as I usually don't do early access but again with story mode and the full version, &just about ready.&I had some fun with the sandbox and actually spent countless hours on it in the first few days. I loved the art style and the environments felt very real. I was excited as I approached every new corner. The problem is once you get the hang of it and are surviving this becomes incredibly boring. Why are you surviving? What is the motivation?!Your time in the sandbox will not last long before you get bored with just surviving. This was not marketed as another survival simulator and I would not have purchased it if it was. Problem is now the dev is basically not dropping story mode and has not made ANY EFFORT to update the release date. The dev has also made countless idiotic changes to the systems of the game. Losing tons of valuable time that could have been spent on dropping the story mode. It's been a long time since I stopped checking for the story mode. Not it is one of those things that I remember about when I see the game in the list and realize oh these sad ????s are still ripping me off. Let's see what they say.Very infuriating to go back to their page and see numerous moronic changes that you can't help but shake your head at yet the ????ers can't even hit at a drop date. The stance of &it'll be finished when we say so& now that they have our money is extremely infuriating. When the story mode drops the graphics of this will look so dated it will be irrelevant.

dr: The game Hinterland made is great.
The game Hinterland promised they'd deliver to the people who paid doesn't exist. After three (or four?) missed deadlines for the release of Story Mode, in order to stop disappointing the community, Hinterland decided to simply not announce any more release dates.
As a sign of good faith, they agreed to provide && on Story Mode progress, and they'd handle spoilers by way of an opt-out system.
Definitely a let-down for the people who have been waiting since 2014 for Story Mode but after so many fails, the decision to stop making promises Hinterland could not keep and the promise of transparency won them some goodwill.More than four months later, Hinterland has provided not a single update on what's going on with Story Mode.Adding insult to injury, Hinterland stated that four months with no updates did not conflict with their understanding of the word ®ular& and the failure to update the community was merely a failure to not be &.&
Amazingly, the reason given for failing to deliver even a single update was the uncertainty of how to handle spoilers -- something Hinterland had solved at the outset in their promise to provide ®ular updates.&When players said Hinterland had been less than honest with the community, Hinterland initially reacted by
and saying the questions had been answered.
for an answer, and facing the prospect that Hinterland's false promises would be brought to the wider gaming community, Hinterland called these criticisms &,& && and &,& && and &.&Finally, after refusing to admit that they misled the paying community, and continue to mislead the paying community, Hinterland banned the people who brought up the issues, myself included. But don't take my word for it.
Read Hinterland's own
and realize that today, a full twenty weeks later, they have delivered precisely nothing on their promise. If you like a Hinterland product as it is right this moment and don't mind supporting such a company, buy The Long Dark (and consider not updating).
It's a beautiful game.If you want a Hinterland product that they've promised to make, hold on to your cash until they've made it.
You may find the money never leaves your pocket.

I must say my girlfriend, the kids and I were very interested in trying this game. We love games like rust and zombie survival games however we figured we would enjoy a more realistic gaming exerpience. We decided to take the chance seeing as the game was pricey for a game in development. $20.
To our pleasant surprise it is very challanging , realistic (just as expected) and detailed. You keep track of hours of the day, thrist, hunger (including calories and such) as well as your fatigue. You can repair items, clothing and other things. You research cooking, hunting and other things with books to further your ability to survive. Many of the activities in the game are like real survival and make the game very enjoyable. This game is NOT a super high paced shoot em up game. Your fortunate to find even a few bullets so you can hunt for survival. This is a mature persons game for people who are thinkers and enjoy trying to figure out how to best use your time and resorces wisely. In conconclusion this game is very good. Do not let the low quality of graphics fool you these developers are really on to something here! I genuinely hope they continue on the complicated path they are on. This game should not be for everyone. This is what I and the kids like about it. PLEASE finish the story mode soon. We all cannot wait for the updates and things to come. Kudos to the developers.I highly recommend this game if your into this style of realism.
