Sink or switch? Complete insurance guide
Comparing car insurance policies can be a nightmare. Chris Harris loses a lot of sleep discovering why.
Chris Harris
Are you actually covered for the accidents you think you are?True or false? The colour of your car can increase the cost of your insurance. True. If you take out a policy with Youi, for example, a black car can cost as much as $180 more to insure each year than a white car. While a white car is about $60 cheaper than a black car to insure with Allianz, most other insurers consider metallic paint an accessory and might charge accordingly.
Why? According to research by the Accident Research Centre at Monash University, white is proven to be the safest. It is typically a solid, non-metallic colour, which means it can be easier to match with your car's existing panels and the least labour-intensive.
It is just one of the many hidden quirks and complexities of comprehensive car insurance sold by companies that range from the big, conventional insurers to banks, Australia Post and even supermarket chain Coles.
A comprehensive insurance policy is the most common type that covers your car and the damage caused to other property. Cheaper third-party property damage is suited for cars typically worth less than about $5000, which covers the damage you cause to others but not your own car.
The amount you pay to have cover, or the premium, is just one part of your policy - that is, until the moment of truth comes and you need to lodge a claim. After that, though, to what benefits does your policy entitle you? Is a loan car included and for how long? Are your accommodation and travel expenses covered if you're far from home? How easy is it to deal with your insurance company once you've lodged a claim?
A recent claim can also increase a premium by up to $180, or 20 per cent. While whole-of-life ratings (or no-claim bonus discounts) are now common with car insurers, so is the practice of increasing the policy after a claim. In some cases, it can add as much as $368 to the annual premium, so it could be better to pay for a small claim yourself rather than have it affect the premium you pay.
As per all insurance products, you are paying for the classic what-if scenario. However, if your vehicle is never damaged, stolen or in a collision that results in a claim, it can be difficult to judge the value of insurance. That is where discounts and incentives come in.
The best car insurance for you isn't necessarily the cheapest but one that reaches a balance between your coverage needs and budget. So consider what factors and benefits are important to you.
Factors insurance companies consider when pricing a policy include age, gender, address, driving and insurance history and the type of car (including its value, performance and claims history).
While we can't do much about our age or gender, other factors bring down the cost of car insurance without resorting to driving white goods on wheels.
Drive has compiled a list of insurance companies with comparative quotes of comprehensive cover to help you better understand your policy or perhaps consider alternatives.
We might even help you save a few dollars.
All premium quotes are for a 31-year-old male driver from Oakleigh, Victoria, with a 2011 Subaru Forester XS automatic, and a 35-year-old female driver from Lane Cove, New South Wales, with a 2011 Mazda3 Maxx hatch automatic. The criterion used for each quote was the same, down to car colour, where it was garaged, etc.
The cheapest
With a starting price for our fictitious drivers (see table) of $468 for a premium in NSW and $585 in Victoria Coles offers the cheapest car insurance, regardless of whether the car is under finance or a claim was lodged. The supermarket chain is owned by Wesfarmers, a company that also owns Bunnings, Officeworks, Target, Kmart and several mining, insurance and industrial businesses.
However, the Coles insurance misses out on some features of other companies.
If your new car is deemed a write-off, it will only be replaced if it's less than 12 months old (some offer up to two years), there's no free car hire following a theft or accident (the latter is an option) and the contents of your car, such as sunglasses and other personal belongings, are not covered. Most insurers cover up to $500 and exclude cash, mobile phones and portable sat-nav units.
Coles also increases a premium by up to $148, or 25 per cent, if you need to make a claim. This is above average among our targeted insurers using our case studies.
This is more than the 21 per cent average of our targeted insurers.
Though not an insurer itself, insurance search engine Zippy, ($865 in NSW, $746 in Victoria), locates some of the cheapest premiums like a one-stop shop (as does iSelect) by comparing prices from some smaller insurers.
Despite Zippy returning varying results between insurers, including Budget Direct and 1st for Women, Drive's separate quotes from some of these companies find they are cheaper to buy via Zippy or iSelect than through the insurer directly. Budget Direct offers the same policy benefits yet ranks 13th and eighth in our findings, with premiums of $929 and $780 respectively.
It's a bit like buying discounted movie tickets from a newsagency instead of the cinema.
The bronze medal goes to no-frills insurer The Buzz (averaging $728), which is underwritten by Insurance Australia Group (IAG), which also comprises RACV, NRMA, CGU, Swann Insurance and SGIO.
At the other end of the scale is ANZ, which has some of the most expensive premiums for our tested criteria with with premiums of $1537 and $1348 - yet offers no extra benefits. Post-claim premiums are likely to increase by $300 or more, or up to 24 per cent.
When looking at states specifically, however, AAMI's no-frills equivalent, .au, offers the second-cheapest premiums in Victoria at an average of $747. The online-only insurer also increases its premiums by less than most others once a claim has been made.
While Suncorp and IAG own a variety of insurance companies that play within various parts of the market, Auto and General Insurance Company provides insurance business to Australia Post, Budget Direct and Virgin Money, among others. Drive's data reveals a pricing differentiation between these businesses, which compete in the same general-insurance segment. Their respective premiums start from $959 and $806 (for NSW and Victoria). $929/$780 and $949/$798. All three increase their premiums significantly if a policy holder makes a claim, with hikes ranging from $247 to $302.
Major insurers such as AAMI and GIO varied for
AAMI ranked seventh in NSW but third in Victoria, while GIO went from 14th to seventh.
As their websites point out, there are more discounts if you have other policies (such as home insurance). But their similarities end there at renewal time after a claim, increasing by $103 (13 per cent) and $323 (42 per cent).
Some insurance companies such as Youi ask detailed questions to better gauge your risk. With premiums starting from $856 (NSW) and $888 (Victoria),
however, the South African-owned company was not the cheapest or most competitive. Youi asks questions relating to your marital and employment status, level of education, occupation and whether you use alternative transport to and from work or a place of study. Like some of the other insurers, it also asks about driving and insurance history, where the car is kept during the day (such as a secure car park, street or at a train station), the average annual mileage and whether you own other vehicles.
They also make you pay dearly for a claim. In our quote for a 31-year-old Victorian male the premium spiked by $246 (28 per cent), while our 35-year-old female from NSW was hit with a $199 increase.
Before you can complete an online quote, however, Youi also requires personal information including an email address and a phone number so it can send you a verification code via SMS and so a representative can call you to complete the quote.
Haves and have-nots
You need to consult the fine print for the details of how good - or poor - an insurance policy is, and how it suits you.
Coles offers a competitive policy in most areas, such as the option of a variable excess to reduce your premium and even grocery replacement of up to $200 if your ice-cream melts and meat spoils, for example, at the time of an accident. Another incentive is a monthly fuel discount of up to 12? a litre for a year, strings attached, at Coles Express service stations. Coles allows a choice of repairers at the forfeit of the lifetime guarantee on repairs, whereas some honour this guarantee. Others, .au and Just Car Insurance (both underwritten by AAMI), won't let you choose. AAMI allows you to submit a quote but its assessors will decide who makes the repairs.
<.au and Just Car Insurance are the only insurers that do not offer a hire car, even as an option. All others offer optional car hire if your car is involved in an accident and most offer free car hire if your car is stolen for up to 14 days or until your car is recovered, whichever is less. RACV and NRMA offer up to 21 days, whereas car hire is an extra with Coles, The Buzz and Real Insurance. AAMI offers various levels of extended coverage at additional costs.
<.au and Just Car Insurance are also the only insurers to not cover accommodation and travel expenses if you're more than 100 kilometres from home. The best performers are the motoring clubs (RACV and NRMA), offering $1000 of cover, while most other insurers offer $500 or less.
Most insurers offer a discount of about 10 per cent for online applications, while multi-policy discounts that bundle other car-insurance policies or your house and contents insurance save 10-25 per cent on contents insurance.
AAMI also offers a free skilled driving course for drivers aged 25 or under if their parents have a car insurance policy. The day-long course encourages driver safety through theory and practical exercises, while also offering participants a policy discount.
Drivers of hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius and fuel-efficient cars that use no more than 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres (such as Ford's diesel-powered Fiesta models) can benefit from a 10 per cent discount with GIO and the NRMA.
Virgin's insurance customers can also earn frequent-flyer points.
Ways to reduce your premium
?Shop around for insurers and cars if you are undecided. Get quotes on different cars, as premiums differ.
?Buy an affordable, mainstream car. The dearer and faster the car, the more expensive it is to insure.
?Get quotes online and finalise over the phone, if necessary. Most insurers offer a discounted online price and an over-the-phone price.
?Opt to pay your premium in an annual lump sum rather than in instalments that may attract a higher rate.
?For couples, ask if you can base the policy on the female/wife with male/husband listed as a nominated driver. Male drivers statistically are a higher risk.
?Consider increasing the excess to an amount with which you are comfortable and check whether this significantly reduces your premium.
?Multi-policy discounts may be available when a car or house and contents insurance is bundled.
?Disclose where your car is kept overnight (such as a locked garage, carport, secure car park) as this is a large risk factor for theft, consequently affecting your premium.
?Avoid finance, if possible, or inquire which options can affect your premium.
?Avoid vehicle modifications. This affects the performance and handling characteristics of a car and may also increase its appeal to thieves.
?Request a discount at renewal time. It is a competitive market and insurers want to retain customers.
?List nominated drivers on your policy and/or exclude younger drivers. Statistically, young male drivers are the highest risk and the premium increases accordingly.
?Encourage young drivers to build their own insurance rating by taking out a policy in their own name instead of being a listed driver on their parents' policy. Most insurers don't recognise the latter as insurance history and assume you have never had insurance and charge accordingly. However, many will acknowledge a claim-free history of third-party property cover and honour a rating/no-claim bonus as though you've always had comprehensive cover.
Ask insurers ...
?If installing a car alarm will reduce your premium or theft excess (if applicable).
?Whether they will insure you if you have previously had a licence suspension (such as driving under the influence of alcohol). Depending on your age, some ask you to disclose the past three years of your driving history, while others go back five years. If you are under 25, they may not insure you at all.
?What modifications you can make to your car.
?Whether an insurer will retain your rating/no-claim bonus protection if you change to them.
?About their claims process and its efficiency. How long will it take until your car is repaired or until you are paid out when the car is declared a write-off? Are their vehicle-assessment centres located conveniently? Will they cover your taxi fares? How much of the process does the claims consultant take care of or are you required to do some legwork? This may include calling smash repairers and arranging quotes.
Cutting Costs
As cars become safer, they are also becoming more complex. But that doesn't necessarily mean they will cost more to insure, thanks to a greater economy of scale, insurance experts say.
Parking sensors, reversing cameras and blind-spot detection are common on many affordable new cars. Then there are hybrids such as Toyota's Prius and the wave of coming electric vehicles that carry expensive batteries.
''The latest cars are made of several types of steel and that's a real benefit in terms of crumple zones and passenger safety - but it also means that to repair them it requires specialist knowledge,'' AAMI spokesman Duncan Bone says.
He says electric cars such as Mitsubishi's i-MiEV will initially cost more to insure but insurers won't know if premiums will fall until the car earns a risk history. ''The more common the model, the cheaper the parts and the cheaper the insurance will be,'' Bone says.
The NRMA senior manager for car and home portfolios for New South Wales, Michael Rabbitt, says the reparability of cars has improved.
''More expensive materials are being put into cars but we also put pressure on them over designs that can be reasonably [and] easily changed.''
