和大家分享一个和圣诞有关的真实故事。1897年，8岁美国小女孩 Virginia 写信给纽约《太阳报》，问：这个世界上有没有圣诞老人？出乎意料的是，《太阳报》在日专门发了一篇社论来回答这个问题：Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus（是的，Virginia，世界上的确有圣诞老人）。社论是该报社的资深编辑 Francis Church 写的。从此，这篇社论成为历史上被最多重印、转发的报纸社论，并以几十种语音出现在图书、电影、报刊、海报里。圣诞之际，感谢网友Lori的翻译，把这封信分享给大家，祝愿我们的大小朋友们圣诞快乐。不管圣诞老人有没有，圣诞节是不是中国人的节日，怀有感恩、快乐之心，总是没错的。正如这封信所表达的那样：世界上有许多东西是眼睛看不到的，是狭小的心眼想像不到的，像爱心和慷慨和忠诚，而它们却把我们的生活带到最美丽最快乐的境界。Virginia 写给《太阳报》的信&DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.&Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.&Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'&Plea is there a Santa Claus?&VIRGINIA O'HANLON.&115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET.&亲爱的编辑，我的一些朋友说，世界上其实没有圣诞老人。爸爸说，如果《太阳报》说有，就是有。请告诉我事实真相，有没有圣诞老人？－ 弗吉尼亚署名和地址以下是《太阳报》编辑的回信VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real?
