The world is not hungry , but it is thirsty . It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use the 3% - the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can't even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted . Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid (避免) a serious water shortage later on? First, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it . Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers . But it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next? The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already used in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we'll be in no danger of drying up.【小题1】The world is thirsty because &&&&.A.3/4 of the earth is covered with waterB.we have enough sea water to use directlyC.we haven't used all the water in rivers and lakesD.about 97% of water on the earth can't be drunk or used for watering plants directly【小题2】Which of the following is true ?A.3% of water on the earth is in rivers and lakes.B.75% of water on the earth is the sea.C.97% of the earth is covered with water.D.3% of water on the earth is sea water.【小题3】From the passage we learn &&&&.A.if every city reuses its water, we'll be in no danger of drying upB.man can only drink and use about 25% of water on the earthC.today in most large cities water is used only onceD.water can be used only once【小题4】To avoid the serious water shortage , which of the following is the most important?A.Save water and try to make good use of the water in rivers and lakes.B.Don't pollute water and keep all rivers and lakes clean.C.Make dirty water clean and then reuse it.D.Try to find a cheaper way to get the salt out of the sea water.【小题5】The name of the passage would be &&&&A.The Sea Water B.How to Save Water C.The Thirsty WorldD.The Polluted WaterD&

习题“The world is not hungry , but it is thirsty . It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered wi...”
短文第一段提出了问题,也给出了***Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly.“因为地球上97%的水是海水,我们不能直接饮用或用它们来浇灌植物。” Man can only drink and use the 3% - the water that comes from rivers and lakes“人们只能饮用和利用其中的3%,这3%的水来自河流和湖泊”。 Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers .“今天,在大多数大城市水只是利用过一次就流入大海和河流”。

APRIL 5 marks the 100thanniversary(周年纪念日)of the sinking(下沉)of the Titanic. In 1997, the movie Titanic was a huge hit all around the world. Now, the 3-D version of the movie will come to Chinese theaters on April 10.As anyone who has seen the movie knows, the Titanic struck an iceberg(冰山) and sank on its first voyage in 1912, killing 1,517 people. A century after the accident, scientists have found something new to blame(负责任) for the sinking: the moon. Donald Olson, a Texas State University physicist, led a team of astronomers(天文学家) to examine the moon’s role, according to Reuters.Normally, icebergs stay in place and cannot move until they melt enough or a high tide(潮汐) frees them. A single iceberg can become stuck many times on its journey southward. The process can take several years.According to Olson, a hundred years ago the moon made its closest approach to the Earth in more than 1,400 years. This caused the moon to have a much stronger pull on the Earth’s oceans than usual, which created a super-high tide. The tide pushed icebergs from shallow waters off the coasts of Canada’s provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador, into the Titanic’s way.“Of course, the final cause of the accident was that the ship struck an iceberg,” Olson told Reuters. “It went full speed into a region with icebergs, but the lunar connection(月亮的联系) may explain how an unusually large number of icebergs got into the path of the Titanic.”The research team will publish their research in the April issue of Sky & Telescope magazine. 1.
