周杰伦的歌归根结底只有四种，中国风、英伦摇滚、周氏说唱、爵士乱弹。这些风格是在第一张专辑里就定型了，之后10多张专辑不过是一直不停的进化而已。《印第安老斑鸠》是典型的爵士乱弹，方文山富有镜头感的歌词，让这首歌有了西部牛仔决斗的主题，可以说是流行歌中不可多得的西部歌曲。
这首歌是周杰伦很早时候的创作，据说也是推荐给了哪位大牌歌手，但别人听不懂，也唱不来，只好退货自己唱。这样的情况在周杰伦出道之前经常发生，因为他的歌的确很怪。《印第安老斑鸠》可以说从词曲、编曲到结构都怪到骨子里了。说到编曲不得不说两句，从前奏之前的马蹄、吵架，到歌曲中间的印第安人怪叫，都是周杰伦想办法掺杂进去的，搞得跟一部电影原声一样，非常适合方文山如此有镜头感的歌词。整首歌的编曲来自于周杰伦的老搭档洪敬尧，原本他自己也是音乐人，不过都作一些钢琴发烧碟，《印第安老斑鸠》这首歌的编曲怪诞、节奏诡异，其实这是洪敬尧自己要收录在专辑中的一首歌编曲，周杰伦听后非常喜欢，直接拿来用到了这首歌中，可以说是完美。
整首歌都在讲老斑鸠和它周遭的事情，不管是“沙漠之中怎么会有泥鳅”还是“长得像猫的狗”，都在说着这个怪诞的世界，一群怪诞的家伙。在间奏过门中，周杰伦插了一小段说唱，“牛仔红蕃在小镇背对背决斗，一只灰狼问我谁是神***手，巫师他念念有词的对酋长下诅咒还我骷髅头，这故事告诉我印第安的传说，还真是瞎透了什么都有。”这算是周董的标签，不过这也是他所有歌曲里面最快速的说唱，一秒钟甚至蹦出3个字来，快得来很多人连着几句话是什么意思都不知道。
