根据新州政府的一项新政策，新州家庭在子女学前班费用这方面可以省下不少的一笔。住在市区的家庭每年可以节省400元左右，而边远地区的家庭则可以省下近1000元。
新州教育厅长皮寇利（Adrian Piccoli）今天宣布，作为早期儿童教育部门改革的一部分，政府将为学前教育提供2000万元的费用补贴。新州范围内的家庭平均可享受最多26%的费用削减，而新州边远地区的家庭则可以节省多达52%的费用。
举例来说，如果家住兰域（Randwick），家中一名4岁的孩子每周上三天学前班，那这个家庭每年可以节省约450元的费用；如果家住卧龙岗（Wollongong），则可以省下900元。而如果住在沃加沃加（Wagga Wagga）和哈蒙德维尔（Hammondville）的话，则分别可以省下930元和950元。
皮寇利表示，这些费用削减将大大帮助那些来自较低社会经济条件家庭的子女，使他们能有更多机会接受学前教育。
费用削减将通过对相关服务提供拨款的方式来实现。但皮寇利指出，要想享受这一政策，家长必须在今年7月31日或在这之前为自己4岁或5岁的子女办好学前班就读登记手续。
这项政策是布伦南报告（Brennan report）向新州政府提出的30项建议中的一个，旨在提升边远地区以及弱势地区儿童的入学率。该报告指出，约14.3%的儿童没有接受学前教育主要都是因为费用问题。
新南威尔士大学社会政策研究中心的布伦南（Deborah Brennan）教授表示，她相信新州政府能够实现让新州范围内4岁和5岁儿童的入学率达到100%的目标。
皮寇利称，学前班费用削减将从下学期开始实施，至今年底结束。预计今年6月，联邦政府也会提供一些拨款，新州政府希望这笔拨款能够帮助将该政策的实施期限延长至几年。
除了2000万元的补贴之外，新州政府还将拨款500万元，用以改善及扩建新州学前教育的设施。
